Shapes and Colors, Oh My!

I can't find my exact set.

This is the closest one I can find.

It will be a bummer if I ever lose one! :( 

We do a color of the day as part of our calendar.

Each day is a different color.

Each day, I put up a new poster.

When I start school, the walls are blank on purpose.

After we do color of the day, we do shape of the day.

We start with the shape of the day board.

Before we do journals, I give them a piece of paper.

I think it is about 1/8 of an 8x11 sheet.

I tell them to "frost the cookie"

we try to use the whole piece because no one wants a small cookie!

I cut out shapes from construction paper wrote the name of the shape on it.

We taped the "cookie shapes" on top.

Thats it!

 

Shape of the Day Part 2

 I have my students trace shapes on the easel, 

right before we draw them on paper.

I tell them they need to color in the shape like they are 

frosting/icing a cookie.

No one wants an unfrosted cookie!

They draw and color them in, then I display them on the board.

This year, I added the shapes behind their art, 

but last year, I just drew the shapes on construction paper.

Shapes Board

 Here's what's going on for our learning board.  It changed from our Color Board and will change again!

The main pieces come from HERE.

I dropped those cute little Scholastic mini-books in a page protector.

I also read a Pip book, but I only have one about all of the shapes and

not the ones that are about each different shape.

I laminated one of two sheets for the students.

They are clipped on a clipboard and stay

on that clipboard the whole time.

We use, check, and then erase.

I was able to print them, but for whatever reason, I couldn't save them, It's so weird!

September Learning

 Here are our centers this week:

We sorted these buttons as a transition activity.

The students chose one button and matched it with another one,

Either by the same color or the same shape.

How we store them:

Science Center: Magnets

 I  have so many of these Kindergarten Crate boxes,

so when I put together the units, more than just printing,

I pop all the extras in these boxes.

There are a ton of cards- the smaller ones hanging,

have the same photo plus more words :)

Since I shared my science center, 

I thought I'd share my math area too.

Here is my math area.

We are a Pip the Pup classroom.

I am trying to convince Tara West, to make some additional

shape cards lol

I take these down each and every year.

When I introduce a shape,

then I hang up a shape card.

Thanksgiving

 We start all of our units with a letter. The kids love opening letters!

These letters get the children excited about the new unit. It introduces new words. These word cards then go into the writing center. 

Same centers this week with the addition of this muffin game.

You could add a number cube. Then roll both the color and number of muffins.

I couldn't find a use for those turkeys until I got this game out.

This was my transition activity.

I use transition activities to space out

our hand washing time.

Sometimes it's verbal.

In this case, I put the cards out on the table upside down.

I called on the children to come and pick up a card.

They flipped the card and put a turkey on the shape that matched.

When I have a "game" that doesn't have as many pieces,

I stop near the end of the "game" and add those used 

pieces back so they can be picked again.

After we play this "game" I put it in centers, so they can play it again!

The following week is short, we are out Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving.

Our morning bins are:

These name puzzles are from HERE.  We are going to practice spelling our names and then we will glue them to make a name tent for our Thanksgiving feast. This is harder than you think for 4/5-year-olds!

The kids loved putting their names up... but they kept falling down grrrrrrr.

We did a directed drawing.

Like step by step. We are still working :)

You can get fancy and add different 

patterns for the feathers.

In one small group, we made these pie slices.

I cut paper plates into quarters. 

I added pumpkin pie spices to the paint. 

We painted the crust brown and the pie orange.

 I punched holes in the pie and the 

tag and attached them with pipe cleaners!!!
